Dear all,

My name is Jihan R. Khattar (LL.M. 07) and I am the president of the Harvard University Alumni Association of Lebanon.

I am contacting you regarding a fundraiser launched by our club to help the educational sector which was badly affected by the Beirut August 4th explosion. This blast, which was probably the largest in a civilian area since WWII, ravaged whole neighborhoods in Beirut, including schools, universities and hospitals. This is a humanitarian crisis which calls for solidarity.

As a result, our club in Lebanon ( the “Harvard Alumni Association of Lebanon”) has initiated a fundraiser to help  two of the most renowned educational establishments in Lebanon which were badly damaged by the blast: Saint Joseph university of Beirut (established in 1875) and  Notre Dame of Nazareth school (established in 1862).

We have partnered with Act for Lebanon –USA (ACT) which is a USA based NGO. ACT will  be promoting our fundraiser and providing us with a platform for those donors who prefer to transfer their donations to an account in the USA.

Kindly find below our fundraiser message. It would be greatly appreciated if the Harvard Club of San Diego could share this message with its members and connections.  I also found that word of mouth is the most efficient method to obtain results, therefore it would be great if you could nudge your members and connections directly to donate.

In addition, the following is the Instagram link related to our fundraiser that you can share on your club’s social media:

Please let me know if you require additional information about our initiative.

Best regards,

Explosion in Beirut – August 4th, 2020

A call from the Harvard University Alumni Association in Lebanon (HUAAL) to donate to two of the most renowned educational establishments badly damaged by the blast: Saint Joseph University of Beirut (established in 1875) and Notre Dame University (established in 1862)

A terrible explosion took place at the Beirut port on August 4, 2020 shaking Lebanon and our community to its core. It is probably the largest explosion in a civilian area since World War II. Whole neighborhoods in Beirut were ravaged by the blast - Mar Mikhael, Gemayzeh, Ashrafieh, Rmeil, Dora and Downtown - have been demolished. Hundreds of people have been killed or mutilated and hundreds of thousands displaced. All the pillars of society including homes, schools, universities, hospitals, churches, mosques and businesses have been damaged or destroyed.

The HUAAL is fundraising for two of the most renowned educational establishments damaged by the blastSaint Joseph University of Beirut (established in 1875) and Notre Dame University (established in 1862). We believe that this initiative is vital because the young Lebanese are immigrating in the tens of thousands and the trend will only increase if the schools and universities are not in a condition to open in the fall. Our educational system is one of the main pillars of Lebanese society and among the best in the regiontherefore we need to support it during these very challenging times. As representatives of Harvard Alumni in Lebanon, please help us help the education sector get back on its feet.
