June Book Club - A beautiful poem of dangerous ideas

On June 10th, we meet to discuss a book by Harvard English Professor, Stephen Greenblatt, The Sweve: How the World Became Modern | Winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize

For the June Book Club meeting, we delve into a Pulitzer Prize Winner.

On Monday, June  10th, we explore The Swerve: How the World Became Modern by Professor Stephen Greenblatt, member of the Harvard English Department.  It was the winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction.

Greenblatt focuses on a discovery 600 years ago of a poem thought to have been lost forever: On the Nature of Things, by Lucretius—a beautiful poem of the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functioned without the aid of gods, that religious fear was damaging to human life, and that matter was made up of very small particles in eternal motion, colliding and swerving in new directions.

We will return to our usual location at the community clubhouse in Andalucia (Carmel Valley, 3702 Mykonos Lane, San Diego, CA 92130.) The meeting gathers at 7pm.

All dues-paying HCSD members are welcomeIf you plan to attend, please email Katie Militello at militell3286@roadrunner.com.
