The Program:
Special Olympics is a year-round worldwide program of sports training and athletic competition for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics is unique in that it provides for competition at all levels of ability by assigning athletes to competition divisions based on both age and actual performance. Even athletes in the lowest divisions may advance all the way to the World Finals.
Purpose:
The purpose of Special Olympics is to contribute to the physical, social and psychological development of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Through positive successful experiences in sport, they can gain confidence, self-mastery, and start to build a self-image associated with success rather than failure. Success on the playing field often has carry over value into the classroom, home, and work place.

Randy Smith has accomplished a lot as a Special Olympics Southern California athlete. Now, Smith gives back to his community and helps spread the word about Special Olympics. This clip is part of the 2010 one-hour special that aired on KTLA and was created by ProAngle Media. |
Meet Randy:
Randy S. was first introduced to Special Olympics when he was six years old. Since then he has participated in basketball, softball and floor hockey.
"Softball is definitely my favorite sport," Randy said. "I love being the pitcher and getting to play in front of a big crowd."
At the San Diego Regional Spring Games, Randy takes the court with his basketball team, The East County Magic.
In addition to leading his teams to victory, Randy is also a leader off the field. He was recently trained to be a Special Olympics Global Messenger, a prestigious position for athletes that allows them to train for and serve as a spokesperson for Special Olympics.
Randy travels to various fundraisers and speaking engagements to educate the community on individuals with intellectual disabilities. He also volunteers his time at the Special Olympics office.
"I love being able to give back to Special Olympics," Randy said. "They have done so much for me so it makes me feel good to help."
When asked what his favorite part of Spring Games is, Randy replied, "Getting to play in front of so many people and meet the volunteers. It makes me feel so good to look out and see all of the volunteers cheering for me. I look forward to it every year."
