Celebrate Composer Franz Schubert's Birthday with a Concert of His Complete Works for Violin & Piano

Harvard graduate Victoria Martino performs with James Lent at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library

Victoria Martino, magna cum laude Harvard graduate, and James Lent celebrate the birthday of Austrian composer Franz Schubert with a performance of his complete works for violin and piano.

Franz Schubert

Like his great countryman and predecessor, Mozart, Schubert was a superb violinist and pianist, and his chamber compositions for the two instruments reflect his consummate understanding and mastery of their expressive and technical possibilities. His works for violin and piano (as in the case of Mozart) span the full range of his brief, yet prolific lifetime—from the youthful and charming early sonatas (incorrectly labeled "sonatinas" by Diabelli, his first publisher, in a deliberate marketing strategy targeting amateur musicians) to the brilliant, complex, and highly virtuoso Rondo and Fantasy of his last years.

Victoria Martino

A ten-year professional sojourn in Vienna established Victoria Martino as one of the leading proponents of the "Wiener Klangstil," a centuries-old, uniquely Viennese approach to sound production and stylistic performance practice of the great Austrian classical repertoire.  During her years in Vienna, Ms. Martino regularly performed chamber music with the soloists of the VIenna Philharmonic and faculty of the pretigious Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst, thus becoming firmly ensconced in the city's most illustrious musical and cultural traditions.  The chamber works of Schubert, the quintessential Viennese composer, have long been in her repertoire, but this special concert will makr her first performance of the composer's complete works for violin and piano.
