As part of the Hammer Museum’s 400 Years of Inequality program series, moral philosopher Susan Neiman (Harvard PhD) discusses her new book ‘Learning from the Germans’ with UCLA history and African Americans.

Moral philosopher Susan Neiman’s new book Learning from the Germans combines philosophical reflection, personal stories, and interviews with Americans and Germans grappling with their respective national histories. She is joined in conversation by UCLA history and African American studies professor Brenda Stevenson, author of What is Slavery? among other books.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Susan dropped out of high school to join the anti-Vietnam War movement. Later she studied philosophy at Harvard University, earning her Ph.D. under the direction of John Rawls and Stanley Cavell.
