Community Service - Smoke Alarms for Seniors

Join us as we help the Burn Institute install smoke alarms for Seniors in San Diego County.

Please join us on Saturday, September 28th as we meet at the Burn Institute to go through a brief training session on the installation of smoke alarms for Seniors who are homeowners in San Diego County.  We'll then be provided with a route to cover for part of the day as a team of 3 Harvard alumni along with all of the necessary supplies for installation.  It will be up to the Senior to chose how many smoke alarms to install in the home which are provided at no charge through a grant funded program.  We'll arrive at homes of Seniors who have requested installations, many with disabilities or without the assistance of a spouse for installation.  The Seniors will sign the necessary paperwork (liability release form, grant paperwork to allow for future funding, etc.) while we're onsite.  This is a unique volunteer opportunity to impact the lives of Seniors in our community, taking into consideration the following statistics provided to us by the Burn Institute:  people older than 65 years of age have a home fire death rate nearly twice the national average which increases to three times the national average at more than 75 years of age.  Yet, having a working smoke alarm in your home cuts your chances of dying in a house fire by 50%.
