ON HALLOWED GROUND: TURNING POINTS OF THE CIVIL WAR

GETTYSBURG – ANTIETAM – WASHINGTON – MANASSAS – RICHMOND

Based in Washington and Richmond, this custom-designed study tour recounts the great turning points of the Civil War, remembering the stories of generals both triumphant and starcrossed; offering specialized visits to iconic battlefields; and tracing the tribulations, triumphs, and tragedies of Abraham Lincoln. The tour includes not only famous battlefields (Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg), but also sites with social and political meaning (Lincoln’s summer cottage, the site of former slave markets in Washington, D.C., the Confederate White House, and the arsenal in Harpers Ferry where John Brown was captured).
 
Schedule by Day
 •Oct 14: Arrive in Washington, DC as well / Take a walking tour of the Dupont Circle area, with a focus on its Civil War context / Lecture / Welcome dinner
 •Oct 15: Drive to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia / Guided tour focusing on John Brown’s raids and the 1862 battle / Drive to the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland for an in-depth walking and driving tour of Antietam
 •Oct 16: Drive to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, with introductory comments en route / Begin the visit with an orientation at the Gettysburg National Military Park museum / Join a military historian for a comprehensive tour of the Gettysburg battlefield
 •Oct 17: Take guided tours of two iconic Civil War era institutions / Visit “President Lincoln’s Cottage” / Stop at Ford’s Theater, the site of Lincoln’s assassination  / Visit the former home of Robert E. Lee, Arlington National Cemetery’s Arlington House / Conclude the day at the National Portrait Museum
 •Oct 18: Drive south toward Virginia / Stop at Manassas National Battlefield Park for a guided walking and driving tour of the first Civil war battlefield, “Bull Run” / Drive to Fredericksburg / Tour the nearby battlefield called “The Wilderness” /Drive to Virginia’s capital, Richmond
 •Oct 19: Attend a lecture by your Harvard study leader / Drive up historic Monument Avenue to view statues of various Confederate heroes / Meet the First Lady of Virginia during a private opening of the Executive Mansion of Virginia / Tour the art collection of the Federal / Enjoy a guided tour of the Civil war galleries of the Virginia Historical Society
 •Oct 20: Tour the American Civil war Center at former Tredegar Iron Works / Visit the beautiful Hollywood Cemetery / Drive to Richmond airport
